Listening to a review of $2400 dollar HD 820 headphones on my $50 HD 518 headphones…

Not like the 518s aren’t a great introduction in to open back “listening” headphones, though. Along with the Philips SHP9500s.

Also Boz Scaggs – Thanks to You is a great song for testing headphones because it has great mastering with very distinct highs, mids, and lows. Pretty good soundstage too. It’s my go-to mostly because I’ve heard it on so many headphones and speakers.

The reason that you can turn the volume up and the sound doesn’t become painful is because it’s not compressed; you’re getting a more realistic dynamic range. Having wrote that, studio pro headphones like the beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (closed back, with port) or mastering headphones like the Beyerdynamic 1990 Pro (open back, so not really comparable) will also give you realistic dynamics (with a decent headphone amp), it’s what they’re built for. The HD820’s are built for the audiofools who eschew the pro headphones listed above as being too “cheap” to be “true audiophile quality” because, as hi-fi snobs, they believe only mega$$$ will give “true high end sound”. It’s how “hi end” companies like Linn and Naim (in the UK) sell their gear: “to be any good, it has to be expensive”. In a way, it’s like buying an Iphone: it has the mystique of being a superior quality product, yet it’s built in China for a few dollars per unit and sold at a markup of around 1000%…

vs the legendary dt880’s. I understand all the sound signatures you are describing because it was the same reaction when I bought the dt880’s with the red dragonfly amp. So much clarity and space between each sound, you really don’t need to spend 2k to experience 95% of what you are talking about. If you have a well EQ’ed pair of open back headphones that don’t try and emphasize a certain signature like the dt880’s then your in heaven.

Isn’t Spotify going to act as a bottleneck due to the compression and thus giving you lower overall soundquality on the headphones? Seems to me that it may be essential with as little compressed music as possible in order to get the full potential of these

It’s hard to describe the way that high-res audio played over high-end equipment sounds to non-audiophiles, but it is definitely more of an experience than you would expect. So much more detail – it’s like finding little treasures in songs that you’ve heard hundreds of times.

Most people don’t take the time to enjoy quality audio in the same way that they would watch high-res video on a $2-3,000 TV, and it is hard for many people to consider spending the same amount for an amazing pair of headphones (and an appropriate DAC/amp for them).

Great audio/sound analogies for non-audiophiles – Great review!

The problem with high-end headphones is that the sound will never come from the front, but from everywhere. This doesn’t allow you to imagine listening to a live performance, which is what a peak sound setup should sound. Speakers in front of you allow you to imagine having someone play before you. With headphones, sound comes from everywhere, that’s not as realistic. Also, 2.3k is actually low-cost for a high fidelity sound setup, you ain’t getting much with that if you buy speakers.
